Senior Systems & Safety Engineer – Autonomy (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: Santa Clara, CA; onsite 5 days a week

Salary: $160,000–$240,000 per year

What you will do

• Define and maintain the Functional Safety Concept and Technical Safety Concept for the Level 4 autonomous system in accordance with ISO 26262 up to ASIL D.
• Lead system-level HARA, STPA, FMEA, FTA, and reliability analysis across perception, localization, mapping, planning, controls, and fault-management modules.
• Derive and trace safety requirements from vehicle-level goals to middleware, autonomy algorithms, diagnostic monitors, and software components.
• Architect fail-operational, fail-aware, and fail-safe fallback strategies, including degraded modes, trajectory fallback, minimum-risk maneuvers, and pull-over behaviors.
• Define safety performance indicators and metrics to assess autonomy-stack maturity and release readiness.
• Collaborate with Autonomy Software, Middleware, Infrastructure, and Systems teams to integrate functional safety into agile development.

Requirements

• B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Robotics, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or Aerospace Engineering.
• 6+ years of functional safety or systems engineering experience in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or safety-critical aerospace and automotive platforms.
• Deep expertise in ISO 26262, UL 4600, and ISO 21448.
• Mastery of HARA, STPA, FMEA, FTA, and Reliability Block Diagrams.
• Strong C++ and Python programming skills for codebase analysis, log analysis, and architectural scripting.
• Experience designing deterministic, real-time autonomous systems and using Jama, DOORS, Enterprise Architect, or code-based tracing tools.

Nice to have

• Experience shipping Level 4 driverless commercial operations for trucking or passenger autonomous vehicles.
• Experience with ROS2 safety layers, Adaptive AUTOSAR, or custom IPC frameworks.
• Expertise in safety arguments using Goal Structuring Notation.
