What you will do

• Lead computational agentic-AI research and engineering projects, including analytical planning, experiments, and development of new agentic methods.
• Design and orchestrate agent hierarchies, tool use, handoffs, checkpointing, and human-in-the-loop controls over Office of Data Science data and tools.
• Build and maintain MCP servers and clients plus A2A-interoperable agents connecting St. Jude Cloud, internal data warehouses, and planning systems.
• Organize, summarize, review, and report results while instrumenting agents with tracing, evaluations, and cost and latency budgets.
• Draft manuscripts and technical reports, support submission and internal review, and guide staff in agentic-AI techniques and best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field with 6+ years of relevant experience; alternatively, a Master's degree with 4+ years or an entry-level PhD with no work experience.
• One to two first-author papers with a journal impact factor above 5, or equivalent research or open-source contributions.
• Production-level depth in at least one agent framework and working awareness of agent frameworks, interoperability protocols, orchestration, evaluation, security, and deployment.
• Experience with MCP servers, clients, and tools; A2A-interoperable agents; JSON-RPC; OAuth 2.1; multi-agent topologies; checkpointing; and human-in-the-loop controls.
• Strong Python, version control, testing, continuous integration, reproducible evaluation harnesses, retrieval and context engineering, and secure, auditable, HIPAA-aligned deployment patterns.

Nice to have

• Applied machine learning or agentic-AI research experience and a track record of shipping LLM-integrated systems.
• Healthcare, biomedical, or other research-intensive domain experience.
• Experience with project coordination, maintenance, and research support activities.
