Principal Payments Engineer (Fintech)

What you will do

• Found and lead the Payments Core team as its most senior individual contributor, reporting to the CTO on an interim basis.
• Design exactly-once payment execution guarantees that remain correct during retries, partial failures, and cross-service races.
• Define internal and external API contracts, including versioning, backward compatibility, and webhook delivery guarantees.
• Set the architecture for multi-rail money movement across ACH, wire, RTP/FedNow, card networks, sponsor banks, and multiple financial institutions.
• Own batching, funding, settlement, reconciliation, exception handling, monitoring, and alerting for critical money-movement workflows.
• Establish architecture-review, RFC, code-review, hiring, and engineering standards for the payments organization.

Requirements

• 12+ years of experience building production payments or financial systems, including operation at tens to hundreds of billions of dollars in GMV.
• Production experience designing or operating double-entry ledgers, derived balances, hot-account partitioning, and schema evolution under load.
• Experience building idempotent, exactly-once payment flows in real-time, high-throughput distributed systems.
• Experience with distributed data architecture, petabyte-scale storage, and high-throughput services delivering sub-50ms latency under production load.
• Deep experience with settlement and reconciliation using bank files, card-network settlement data, and ACH returns.
• Experience with ACH, wire, RTP/FedNow, card networks, multi-financial-institution orchestration, sponsor-bank integrations, and networks such as Visa Direct.

Nice to have

• Experience at a payments platform such as Stripe, Block/Square, Modern Treasury, Marqeta, or Adyen.
• Experience modernizing or hardening load-bearing payments infrastructure without interrupting money movement.
• Familiarity with PCI DSS, ISO 20022 messaging, and scheme-level settlement file formats.
