Senior Staff Software Engineer (Fintech)

Location: California, United States; hybrid in-office collaboration with teams deciding which 10+ days per month employees come in

Annual base salary: $236,000–$295,000 USD for positions based in California, excluding equity, bonuses, and other additional compensation

What you will do

• Own the multi-year architecture for the compliance control plane, including real-time screening orchestration, decision and data planes, resilience, observability, and vendor-agnostic integrations.
• Design solutions for multi-vendor failover, sub-second decisioning, partial dependency failures, high throughput, and regulator-grade auditability.
• Define integration contracts, resilience patterns, and compliance primitives adopted by partner engineering teams.
• Translate regulatory obligations and organizational goals into durable engineering primitives and a sequenced technical roadmap.
• Partner with Engineering, Compliance, Legal, Product, auditors, regulators, and external providers to shape technical decisions.
• Set production ownership standards and mentor senior and staff engineers through architecture reviews and technical leadership.

Requirements

• 12+ years building production backend systems.
• Deep expertise in Java or comparable JVM languages, Go, or Rust.
• Experience owning architecture for complex distributed systems at scale across multiple teams or organizations.
• Strong knowledge of failover, graceful degradation, idempotency, high-throughput real-time decisioning, and dependency resilience.
• Excellent REST and gRPC API design judgment, with experience establishing organization-wide engineering patterns.
• Working knowledge of Kubernetes, observability tooling such as Grafana or OpenTelemetry, and cloud infrastructure; AWS is preferred.

Nice to have

• Experience in fintech, payments, identity, or compliance technology.
• Experience developing senior and staff engineers and raising an organization’s technical bar.
