TL;DR
Staff Robotics Engineer, Localisation (Robotics/Autonomous Vehicles): Designing and productionising onboard state-estimation systems that fuse GNSS, IMU and wheel-odometry measurements for reliable vehicle pose and motion estimates with an accent on real-time deployment, fault handling and validation. Focus on shaping localisation architecture, building benchmarking and regression-testing systems, and solving complex integration challenges across robotics, sensors, controls and vehicle-platform teams.

Location: Hybrid role based in the London, UK office, combining office and workshop work with time working from home.

What you will do

  • Define and evolve the architecture and technical roadmap for onboard localisation.
  • Develop state-estimation systems that fuse GNSS, IMU and wheel-odometry signals, with potential integration of camera, RADAR and LiDAR measurements.
  • Take localisation algorithms from prototyping through production implementation and deployment on real-time vehicle platforms.
  • Implement robust fault handling and degraded-mode behaviour across diverse vehicles and operating conditions.
  • Build validation and benchmarking capabilities using representative datasets, ground-truth comparisons, performance metrics and regression testing.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership and mentorship while resolving system-level issues across robotics, calibration, controls, sensor and vehicle-platform teams.

Requirements

  • Deep practical expertise in localisation, state estimation or sensor fusion, including GNSS, IMU and wheel-odometry measurements.
  • Strong knowledge of Kalman-family filters such as EKF and UKF, as well as nonlinear optimisation approaches including factor graphs.
  • Experience operating localisation or state-estimation systems in production robotics, autonomous vehicles or comparable real-time systems.
  • Strong modern C++ engineering skills and proficiency in Python for prototyping, analysis, validation and testing.
  • Experience with localisation validation and benchmarking, including accuracy metrics, uncertainty evaluation, ground-truth comparison, regression testing and failure analysis.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through architecture definition, roadmap influence, mentorship and cross-team collaboration.

Nice to have

  • Experience with camera, LiDAR or RADAR measurements, visual odometry, LiDAR odometry or RADAR odometry.
  • Experience with GTSAM, Ceres, g2o, ROS, Eigen, OpenCV, PCL or CUDA.
  • Familiarity with automotive software practices and MISRA C++.
  • Experience deploying state-estimation software on embedded or resource-constrained real-time platforms.
  • MS or PhD in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
