Staff Software Engineer - Embedded Software Platform (Automotive)

Location: Remote within the United States; candidates living within 50 miles of a GM hub in Austin, Texas; Milford, Michigan; Mountain View, California; or Warren, Michigan must report to the hub three times a week or as directed by the manager. Travel of less than 25% is required.

Salary: $171,150–$288,500 per year, plus bonus potential.

What you will do

• Own architecture, roadmaps, and execution strategies for embedded software platform capabilities.
• Lead multi-team technical initiatives from problem definition through adoption and operationalization.
• Modernize CI/CD, build, test, virtualization, simulation, and release workflows for embedded software.
• Establish reusable engineering standards, quality gates, automation, ownership models, and operational practices.
• Use engineering data and operational signals to improve reliability, feedback time, release confidence, and developer productivity.
• Align embedded software, validation, cybersecurity, cloud, quality, program, and supplier stakeholders while coaching senior engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Typically 15 or more years of experience developing, integrating, deploying, or validating software systems.
• Deep understanding of embedded and real-time software architecture and experience with safety-critical or mission-critical products.
• Experience leading complex technical initiatives across multiple teams or organizations.
• Production proficiency in Python and at least one additional software or engineering-tooling language.
• Experience with at least one platform area involving CI/CD, cloud, infrastructure as code, embedded test automation, build systems, artifact repositories, or data and API platforms.

Nice to have

• Automotive, aerospace, defense, industrial, regulated, or safety-critical experience.
• Knowledge of ISO 26262, functional safety, cybersecurity engineering, ASPICE, MISRA, or AUTOSAR.
• Experience with SIL, CoSIM, vECU, HIL, benches, or system-level validation.
• Experience establishing platform products, reusable templates, developer self-service, engineering standards, or reliability objectives.
• Advanced degree in a related technical field.
