Principal Software Engineer - Embedded Software Platform

Location: Remote within the United States; candidates living within 50 miles of an Austin, Texas, Milford, Michigan, Mountain View, California, or Warren, Michigan GM hub must report onsite three times a week or as otherwise directed. Travel required up to 25%. Relocation benefits may be available.

Salary: $226,000–$407,100 annually, plus incentive compensation.

What you will do

• Define future-state architecture and multi-year roadmaps for embedded software engineering platforms.
• Set enterprise standards, governance, decision rights, reliability expectations, and quality frameworks.
• Resolve cross-domain technical risks involving architecture, security, quality, scalability, cost, and delivery continuity.
• Guide platforms for CI/CD, virtualization, testing, build systems, artifact management, data, and developer self-service.
• Advise senior and executive leadership on investment choices, technical tradeoffs, and platform health.
• Mentor staff and principal engineers and strengthen technical communities across engineering, validation, cloud, cybersecurity, quality, program management, and suppliers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Typically 15 or more years of experience developing, integrating, deploying, or validating software systems, including architecture leadership across organizations.
• Deep understanding of embedded and real-time software architecture and experience delivering safety-critical or mission-critical products.
• Strong experience with production engineering platforms, software delivery systems, or engineering productivity capabilities; proficiency in Python and at least one additional programming language.
• Significant depth in virtualization and CI infrastructure, CI and quality gating, test-system modernization, or build-system modernization.
• Experience with embedded software, Linux, Git, CI/CD, cloud platforms, infrastructure as code, test automation, artifact management, data, APIs, or platform reliability.

Nice to have

• Experience in automotive, aerospace, defense, industrial, regulated, or other safety-critical environments.
• Knowledge of ISO 26262, cybersecurity engineering, ASPICE, MISRA, AUTOSAR, or related engineering practices.
• Experience with SIL, CoSIM, vECU, HIL, benches, physical systems, or other virtual and hardware-based validation environments.
• Advanced degree in a related technical field.
