Senior R&D Electrical Engineer (Embedded Systems)

Salary: $109,000–$174,800 per year

What you will do

• Design electrical architectures, circuits, PCBs, power electronics, battery systems, motor controllers, surgical power tools, and related electromechanical equipment.
• Develop, test, and maintain low-level embedded firmware in C and C++ for microcontroller-based medical devices.
• Implement motor control, battery management, sensor acquisition, communications, diagnostics, fault detection, and real-time control functions.
• Lead prototype board bring-up, laboratory troubleshooting, hardware and firmware integration, design verification, and system power characterization.
• Maintain electrical system ownership from feasibility and architecture through regulatory approval, manufacturing release, and product lifecycle support.
• Collaborate with systems, mechanical, software, quality, regulatory, clinical, manufacturing, and supplier teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
• Eight or more years of experience developing architectures for embedded hardware and firmware platforms.
• Strong experience with analog, digital, mixed-signal, power electronics, control systems, component selection, and schematic development.
• Hands-on embedded C development involving microcontrollers, peripheral control, interrupts, real-time behavior, and direct hardware interfaces.
• Experience with SPI, I2C, UART, LIN, CAN, PCB development, board bring-up, debugging, and hardware/firmware integration.
• Experience with design verification and products developed in a regulated design-control or quality-system environment.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
• Experience with FDA-regulated medical devices, surgical power tools, robotics, or other safety-critical products.
• Experience with brushless DC motors, three-phase inverters, gate drivers, MOSFET power stages, current sensing, or field-oriented control.
• Experience with lithium-ion batteries, battery-management ICs, chargers, and battery safety standards.
• Experience with Altium Designer, Cadence, OrCAD, LTspice, LTpowerCAD, or comparable tools.
