TL;DR
Financial Clearance Specialist (Healthcare Finance): Managing pre-service financial clearance, insurance verification, prior authorizations, and patient communication for cancer care with an accent on payer policy interpretation, out-of-network coverage, and accurate documentation. Focus on resolving authorization challenges, coordinating provider-to-health-plan interventions, and protecting patients and the Institute from financial risk.

Location: Boston, Massachusetts, United States; remote work with occasional onsite presence

Salary: $49,700–$59,500 per year

What you will do

  • Review daily appointment records and prioritize patients requiring insurance authorization.
  • Verify insurance benefits through eligibility systems, payer portals, and telephone communication.
  • Explain financial clearance, benefits, network status, authorization, and referral requirements to patients.
  • Prepare and monitor prior authorization and referral requests in line with payer guidelines.
  • Coordinate responses to denied or policy-disputed requests, including peer-to-peer discussions, letters of medical necessity, and provider appeals.
  • Maintain accurate clearance records and communicate status with patients, physicians, schedulers, representatives, and clinical staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; a bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • 2–3 years of relevant experience in a hospital or physician office, prior authorization, financial counseling, billing, health insurance, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of third-party payer rules and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of Epic or another hospital information system.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, customer service, collaboration, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with sensitive patient information and maintain confidentiality.

Nice to have

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in medical policy review, pharmacy support, healthcare administration, training, or instructional design.
