TL;DR
Software Engineer, Robotics (PLCs/C++/Python): Designing, programming, and commissioning control software for automated machinery with an accent on PLC programming, motion and I/O systems, and hardware integration. Focus on testing physical robotic systems, debugging real-time software-hardware interactions, and ensuring safe, reliable machine operation.

Location: Boston office in Charlestown, Massachusetts; minimum four days per week in the office, with additional days as required by project demands.

Salary: $139,500–$145,500 annually for Massachusetts.

What you will do

  • Write, test, and debug control software for automated systems using PLCs, Structured Text, C++, C, and Python.
  • Commission motion and I/O systems and support control systems throughout their life cycle.
  • Integrate pneumatic and motion-controlled sensors and actuators into robotic systems.
  • Test and debug physical machinery in the lab for safe and reliable operation.
  • Document machine specifications and operating guides.
  • Support the Electrical Controls team with control-system schematics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 1–3 years of experience in software engineering or a related field.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and patience when debugging real-time interactions between software and hardware.
  • Familiarity with IEC 61131-3 automation languages such as Structured Text or with C, C++, or Python for hardware interfacing.
  • Interest in working directly with hardware, motors, and robotics, including hands-on machine troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work from the Boston office at least four days per week.

Nice to have

  • Academic projects, extracurricular activities such as FIRST Robotics, or internships involving robotics, industrial automation, or mechatronic systems.
  • Exposure to B&R Industrial Automation software, including Automation Studio, and related hardware.
