Principal Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Woking, United Kingdom; hybrid work arrangement

What you will do

• Lead delivery of AI-enabled platform capabilities supporting drug discovery, clinical development, and commercial operations.
• Design and productionise scalable GenAI solutions using retrieval augmented generation, MCP-style integrations, and agentic patterns.
• Translate scientific and business use cases into AI system designs integrated with data platforms, workflows, and APIs.
• Establish engineering practices for GenAI and LLM applications, including evaluation, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
• Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, influence architecture, and drive adoption from proof of concept through general release.

Requirements

• Experience designing, building, and operating LLM-powered capabilities such as document summarisation, RAG, and question answering over enterprise datasets.
• Experience developing unstructured data pipelines, metadata extraction and enrichment, and hybrid architectures using vector stores and relational databases.
• Experience deploying AI systems to production with monitoring for model behaviour, data drift, cost, and latency.
• Ability to version prompts, models, and data and implement feature flags and controlled rollout strategies.
• Ability to collaborate with data scientists and domain experts, provide technical leadership, and mentor engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience applying GenAI in life sciences, BioPharma, scientific, clinical, or regulated GxP environments.
• Experience with enterprise AI ecosystems and cloud platforms such as Databricks and AWS.
• Experience defining AI engineering evaluation, governance, and scalable adoption practices.
