TL;DR
Area Lead Health Information Specialist (Healthcare Data/HIPAA): Processing and disclosing patient medical records across a regional health system with an accent on release-of-information operations, privacy compliance, and document accuracy. Focus on electronic record retrieval, scanning and redaction, leading team huddles, training staff, and maintaining service levels across multiple hospital locations.

Location: Nashville, Tennessee, with travel of 75% or more to Green Hills Nashville, Lebanon, Tullahoma, and Clarksville, Tennessee. Hybrid role with the ability to commute between locations as needed.

What you will do

  • Receive, process, retrieve, and disclose patient health information in accordance with company, facility, and HIPAA requirements.
  • Assemble, scan, copy, digitize, review, and transmit medical records while maintaining accuracy, completeness, confidentiality, and security.
  • Manage requests from facility and external sources, answer calls, support walk-ins, and handle related administrative duties such as faxes, mail, data entry, and pickup scheduling.
  • Lead daily huddles, training sessions, onboarding, shadowing, and professional development for Health Information Specialist staff.
  • Provide regional coverage, support quality assurance and productivity initiatives, generate reports, and communicate operational issues to management and senior leadership.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and at least one year of health information-related experience.
  • Must be able to travel locally or regionally 75% or more of the time and commute between assigned locations.
  • Knowledge of release of information processes, HIPAA compliance, medical privacy, and secure handling of patient records.
  • Basic computer proficiency, strong data-entry and organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills in English, including presentation skills for small groups.
  • Ability to work variable operating hours, overtime during peak seasons, and in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

  • Two or more years of health information-related experience.
  • Experience with EPIC or Cerner electronic health record systems.
  • Production or metric-based work experience and familiarity with productivity standards.
  • In-person customer service experience and the ability to build relationships with onsite clients.
  • Experience suggesting process improvements and providing feedback to internal stakeholders.
