Lead Data Engineer (Healthcare)

Location: Based in Europe, preferably within commuting distance of Amsterdam, Netherlands; the data team typically attends the office weekly. Office, home, or hybrid work locations are available.

What you will do

• Lead the end-to-end design and delivery of data pipelines and warehouse layers using Prefect, Python, and SQL.
• Standardize platform patterns, reduce operational overhead, and improve maintainability, reliability, lineage, and data quality.
• Plan releases, validation strategies, and risk management to maintain continuity during platform changes.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, QA, Application, and AI/ML leads to refine requirements and integrate data components with search and ML pipelines.
• Increase test maturity, automation, and engineering quality through reviews, CI/CD, and controlled AI-assisted development.
• Lead and mentor data engineers while managing work intake and prioritization.

Requirements

• Extensive hands-on Python development experience building scalable, maintainable, testable, production-grade solutions.
• Experience designing and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines with orchestration frameworks such as Airflow, Prefect, Luigi, or Dagster.
• Experience with dbt, Databricks, advanced SQL, enterprise relational databases, cloud data platforms, data warehouses, and Lakehouse architectures.
• Experience providing architectural guidance, making independent design decisions, and mentoring development teams or serving as a senior technical contributor.
• Strong understanding of data quality, lineage, observability, governance, performance optimization, DevOps, automated testing, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code.
• Exceptional written and verbal English communication skills and European location are required; proximity to Amsterdam is preferred.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of FHIR-based data exchange, OMOP, or medical ontologies.
• Healthcare, life sciences, clinical trials, or pharmaceutical data experience.
• Data lineage experience and Dutch language skills.
