Staff Software Engineer - Kilo Code (AI)

Location: Remote within the United States; must be based in and work Eastern Time hours.

Base salary: $200,000–$260,000 for candidates in New York City and San Francisco; $150,000–$220,000 for other US-based team members, plus annual bonus potential, equity participation, and benefits.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for performance optimization across startup time, memory footprint, CLI communication, and instrumentation.
• Design and ship AI-assisted coding features such as granular auto-approval rules, context optimization, and Smart Apply workflows.
• Lead initiatives spanning the VS Code extension, backend services, and AI infrastructure, translating priorities into technical roadmaps.
• Own end-to-end delivery from technical design through deployment, rollout, telemetry, and post-launch iteration.
• Establish engineering standards for context-window optimization, token compression, and chat interface patterns.
• Mentor engineers and partner with Product and Design on architecture, roadmap priorities, code quality, and technical tradeoffs.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software development experience and technical leadership on production systems serving large user bases.
• Deep experience building developer tools, IDE extensions, or similar productivity software used by 100K+ people.
• Expertise in TypeScript, modern JavaScript, asynchronous patterns, event-driven architectures, and Node.js runtime optimization.
• Experience with profiling, instrumentation, and measurable performance improvements in startup time, memory usage, or throughput.
• Experience with AI-assisted coding tools, chat interfaces, agent-based workflows, context-window management, and LLM integration patterns.
• Must be based in the United States and able to work Eastern Time hours.

Nice to have

• Experience optimizing VS Code extensions, Electron applications, or similar runtime environments.
• Technical leadership in AI, data science, developer tooling, or productivity platforms.
• Open-source contributions as a core maintainer or technical lead.
• Experience mentoring engineers and leading cross-functional initiatives in fast-paced startup environments.
