Patient Accounting Follow-up Billing Specialist I (Medical Billing): Managing assigned hospital and physician accounts receivable, following up on third-party claims, and correcting payment and adjustment issues with an accent on denial management, reimbursement verification, and payer documentation. Focus on reviewing claim denials, processing appeals and refunds, and working across billing systems and payer portals.

Location: Brookline, Massachusetts, United States; hybrid work with occasional onsite attendance

Salary: $47,500–$53,600 per year

What you will do

  • Manage an assigned portion of accounts receivable for Medicare, MassHealth, and other government insurers.
  • Follow up with third-party payers through portals, email, fax, mail, and phone.
  • Review claim denials and coordinate with internal departments to support claim adjudication.
  • Compare payments with payer contracts to verify reimbursement and adjustment accuracy.
  • Evaluate credit balances and process third-party refunds when needed.
  • Fulfill payer documentation requests, including medical records, itemized bills, appeals, and proof of timely filing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of hospital or physician-office insurance claims follow-up experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and billing software.
  • Some knowledge of hospital or physician billing software, third-party regulations, and patient accounting regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and under direct supervision while maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards.

Nice to have

  • Experience with access management, including scheduling, registration, and financial clearance.
  • Coding and denial management experience.
