Medical Interpreter (All Languages)

Location: Tufts Medical Center, United States; may require on-call availability for emergencies at night and on weekends.

Pay range: $23.04–$28.80 per hour.

What you will do

• Interpret spoken communication between English and target languages for patients, families, physicians, and staff.
• Translate correspondence, brochures, medical documents, and information about diagnostic procedures and treatments.
• Act as a culture broker to identify and resolve misunderstandings caused by cultural differences.
• Support family meetings, patient care conferences, consent collection, appointment notifications, transfers, and financial-aid processes.
• Accompany patients to operating rooms or other departments when interpretation support is required.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA/HITECH, hospital policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Medical Interpreter Certification from an accredited college or university, or certification from a medical interpreter training course plus successful completion of a third-party competency exam.
• At least one year of relevant interpreting experience.
• Bilingual proficiency in English and a target language, including the ability to read, write, and communicate in both languages.
• Advanced knowledge of interpreting techniques, medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
• Ability to work in a busy healthcare environment and regularly stand, walk, and interact with patients under varied conditions.

Nice to have

• National Certification for Medical Interpreters.
• Three years of relevant interpreting experience.
