What you will do

  • Provide clinical care, treatments, handling, restraint, and euthanasia for laboratory animals as directed by veterinary and technical services leadership.
  • Manage mouse colony activities, including sexing, weaning, breeding-pair establishment, identification, and electronic cage-card updates.
  • Perform injections, blood collection, serum preparation, sample collection, and other assigned small-animal study procedures.
  • Monitor animal colonies for illness, injury, overcrowding, and mortality, and document and report findings.
  • Prepare sentinel animals and samples for diagnostic pathogen testing and support quarantine imports, exports, and intramural transfers.
  • Maintain accurate technical service, health, breeding, census, sterilization, receiving, disposition, and equipment records.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; BA/BS preferred.
  • Three years of experience in an AAALAC-accredited laboratory animal facility.
  • Knowledge of laboratory animal studies, including IP, IV, SQ injections, oral gavage, blood collection, and minor surgical procedures.
  • Experience with mouse breeding colonies, animal handling, treatments, and euthanasia.
  • Organized, meticulous record keeping and basic computer skills with word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.

Nice to have

  • One year of small-animal studies experience in academia or industry.
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician certification.
  • Previous experience working with infectious agents at ABSL-2/3 level.
  • Willingness to learn Bioluminescence Imaging techniques.
