Senior BESS Project Engineer

Location: Remote, with a home office based in the Phoenix, Arizona area; travel up to 50% for site visits, testing, and commissioning support.

What you will do

• Lead design reviews for single-line diagrams, control schematics, system architectures, vendor submittals, control narratives, and points lists across multiple BESS projects.
• Own system integration and controls scope for primarily behind-the-meter BESS projects, coordinating engineering, procurement, construction, operations, subcontractors, and vendors.
• Verify the specification, programming, installation, and configuration of protective relays, controllers, meters, monitoring equipment, communication networks, and related systems.
• Support construction and commissioning teams with functional testing, relay testing, communications verification, data monitoring validation, and utility acceptance testing.
• Troubleshoot design and commissioning issues, resolve punch-list items, and confirm compliance with utility, interconnection agreement, and project requirements.
• Mentor entry- and mid-level engineers and help establish standards, workflows, checklists, and commissioning templates for BESS controls and monitoring.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
• At least 7 years of relevant experience in electrical design, controls engineering, protective relaying, or BESS project work.
• Demonstrated ability to independently lead BESS design reviews and controls integration across concurrent projects.
• Working knowledge of protective relays, site and plant controllers, SCADA, EMS/BMS platforms, and communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850.
• Experience with utility interconnection testing, relay testing, commissioning, and coordination of subcontract engineering teams and vendors.
• Ability to travel up to 50% of the time for site visits, testing, and commissioning support.

Nice to have

• Experience with BESS platforms from manufacturers such as Tesla, Fluence, and SMA.
• Experience programming protective relays such as SEL or GE and configuring site or plant controllers.
• Experience installing and commissioning BESS or microgrid systems.
• Professional Engineering (PE) license.
• Experience with front-of-meter, utility-scale, or substation-interconnected BESS projects, plus AutoCAD or similar drawing review tools.
