TL;DR
Powertrain - Mechanical Design Engineer II (Front & Rear Axles) (Automotive): Developing axle components and systems for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and buses with an accent on mechanical hardware design, packaging, DFMEA/DVP, tolerance calculations, simulation, prototyping, and testing. Focus on solving complex root-cause problems, coordinating suppliers and global engineering counterparts, and releasing axle systems to production.

Location: Detroit, Michigan, United States; hybrid schedule with 4 days per week in the office and 1 day remote. Applicants must be able to work in or relocate to Detroit. Relocation assistance is not available.

Salary: $95,000–$115,000 USD annually, depending on knowledge, skills, and experience.

What you will do

  • Develop axle components and systems for medium- and heavy-duty truck and bus applications at component and system level.
  • Define product specifications, concepts, designs, packaging, DFMEA/DVP, tolerance calculations, simulations, prototypes, testing, and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, manufacturing, sales, purchasing, suppliers, and global colleagues in Detroit, Stuttgart, and Portland.
  • Manage component suppliers and support the release of axle components and systems to production.
  • Resolve plant issues, field problems, and customer requests while documenting findings and recommendations.
  • Create project plans and timelines, support budget definition, and drive continuous improvements in product cost, quality, tools, and processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar technical field.
  • 2–4 years of relevant experience in mechanical hardware development.
  • Knowledge of propulsion, axle, and transmission systems, with a strong automotive background.
  • Experience identifying root causes and solving complex problems, managing multiple projects, and communicating barriers to management.
  • Strong CAD, analytical, organizational, communication, interpersonal, PC, MS Office, and database skills.
  • Permanent legal authorization to work in the United States is required; visa sponsorship is not available, and existing visa holders are not eligible. A resume attachment is required.

Nice to have

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar technical field.
  • Ability to understand and speak German.
  • Previous service literature experience.
