Network & Security Infrastructure Engineer

Location: Washington, DC, United States; office-based or remote. The role is contingent upon additional funding.

What you will do

• Lead the re-architecture of the enterprise VMware ESXi environment to support firewall enforcement, VLAN segmentation, and network traffic isolation.
• Design and document virtual switches, distributed switches, virtual port groups, and future-state virtual network architecture.
• Administer internal and cloud-facing Check Point and Palo Alto firewall environments, including policies, upgrades, software blades, IPS, URL filtering, application control, antivirus, and malware detection.
• Monitor and secure Cisco routing and switching infrastructure and Aruba wireless environments.
• Analyze network communication flows, protocols, and security policies, and isolate network-based security issues during incidents and outages.
• Coordinate with cybersecurity, systems administration, and technology support teams on monitoring, risk assessments, vulnerabilities, patching, and infrastructure documentation.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in network security engineering or a closely related infrastructure discipline.
• Hands-on enterprise experience designing and re-architecting VMware ESXi environments, including VLAN segmentation and virtual networking.
• Hands-on experience administering Check Point and Palo Alto enterprise firewalls.
• Strong Cisco networking experience covering routing, switching, network security, TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, VLANs, and VPNs.
• Experience securing Aruba wireless access point environments and identifying network security issues.
• Ability to collaborate across technical teams, communicate infrastructure risks, and maintain accurate configuration and troubleshooting documentation.

Nice to have

• Experience with FireMon or equivalent network security policy management platforms.
• Experience with IDS/IPS, SIEM integration, Python, PowerShell, or Bash automation.
• Cloud networking security experience in AWS or Azure, including Palo Alto cloud-native firewall solutions.
• Knowledge of Zero Trust network access, micro-segmentation, VPNs, and secure remote access architectures.
• A relevant degree or certifications such as CCNP Security, VCP, CCSE, or PCNSE.
