PhD Research & Development Intern (Digital Science and Engineering)

Location: On-site at least four days per week in Maplewood, Minnesota, or Austin, Texas, United States

What you will do

• Support the development of new technologies and existing products through scientific and technical research.
• Collaborate with researchers, analytical chemists, process engineers, and other R&D functions.
• Work with senior researchers on product, technology development, application engineering, or digital science projects.
• Lead assigned projects toward advanced technical solutions and investigate early-stage opportunities.
• Document experiments in electronic laboratory notebooks for invention submissions and potential patent applications.
• Analyze, interpret, and communicate experimental results.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a PhD in science or engineering at an accredited institution.
• Completed at least freshman year, equivalent to two semesters, by the start of the internship.
• Relevant expertise may include chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, computer science, chemistry, data science, software engineering, or related disciplines.
• Experience with scientific research, laboratory work, experimental design, statistical analysis, or complex data workflows.
• Programming experience with Python, MATLAB, C, C++, or R; experience with object-oriented design and data manipulation is relevant for digital science projects.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employment visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

• Experience with machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics, or software engineering.
• Experience with Microsoft Azure ML or AWS ML, distributed Big Data workflows, or scientific models and simulations.
• Six to twelve months of practical experience in polymer or small-molecule synthesis, materials characterization, chemical processing, nanotechnology, sensors, optical materials, robotics, additive manufacturing, or mechanical design.
• Previous internship or co-op experience, publications, or scientific presentations.
