TL;DR
Senior Mechanical Designer (Mechanical Design and Rugged Electronics Packaging): Designing, developing, and verifying sheet-metal and machined-metal components and assemblies for high-performance electronics used in harsh environments with an accent on 3D modeling, manufacturability, and mechanical testing. Focus on applying FEA and CFD, troubleshooting hardware, reviewing technical designs, and leading small project teams.

Location: Hiawatha, Iowa, United States. Full-time, on-site, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; no travel required.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and verify sheet-metal and machined-metal components and assemblies.
  • Convert technical requirements into schematic diagrams, mechanical drawings, and assembly documentation using CAD tools.
  • Ensure designs are producible, accurate, and compliant with applicable specifications and standards.
  • Support product builds, pilot-line testing, manufacturing troubleshooting, and technical services.
  • Review peer designs, identify process deficiencies, and implement corrective actions.
  • Mentor new hires and lead small teams of one to three members on defined projects.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Person: a US citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected person.
  • Associate of Science degree in mechanical engineering plus at least five years of mechanical design experience, or at least eight years of mechanical design experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Advanced knowledge of 3D modeling, mechanical design tools, and metal machining, fabrication, and assembly processes.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and Ansys simulation software.
  • Understanding of finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, CNC design requirements, and mechanical component standards.
  • Ability to inspect and troubleshoot computer hardware at assembly level and use measurement and testing equipment.

Nice to have

  • At least two years of mechanical component design or manufacturing experience.
  • At least one year of CAD-related work experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of computer equipment, including servers, switches, firewalls, UPS systems, and data acquisition systems.
  • At least one year of leadership experience.
