TL;DR

Focus on applying USACE and regional wetland standards, preparing Clean Water Act and state permits, mentoring field staff, and managing environmental resource projects.

Location: Lowell, Massachusetts; the role may also report to offices in Waltham, Massachusetts, East Providence, Rhode Island, or Windsor, Connecticut, and includes field surveys across the Northeast.

Salary: USD $128,586–$160,014 per year, with potential eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus.

What you will do

  • Lead wetland delineations and functional assessments using the USACE 1987 Manual and applicable regional supplements.
  • Lead stream, floodplain, hydrologic, water-based, terrestrial, and other biological resource surveys.
  • Prepare permit applications and support regulatory processes involving MassDEP, CT DEEP, RIDEM, USACE, USFWS, Clean Water Act Sections 404, 10, and 408, and Section 401 certifications.
  • Prepare scientific reports and environmental impact assessments.
  • Provide senior quality assurance and quality control for wetland and habitat assessments and reports.
  • Manage environmental projects and mentor field technicians and wetland scientists.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in ecology, environmental science, geology, hydrology, natural resources, wildlife science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of relevant environmental science experience with demonstrated subject matter expertise.
  • Experience leading wetland delineations and functional assessments across multiple jurisdictions, including GPS equipment and electronic data collection.
  • Ability to complete field surveys, technical writing, client and agency presentations, and environmental permitting assignments.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements for transportation and energy infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing and mentoring field staff and wetland scientists.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Project management experience and previous staff management or mentoring experience.
  • PWS or another relevant professional license or certification, or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience preparing CEPA, MEPA, or NEPA documentation and conducting turtle habitat assessment and monitoring.
