R&D Scientist (Environmental Treatment)

Location: Onsite in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM; occasional weekend laboratory work and travel of up to 30% may be required.

Annual compensation: $80,000–$90,000, plus an annual discretionary bonus.

What you will do

• Conduct R&D experiments using ion exchange and adsorbents for drinking water, wastewater, landfill leachate, and remediation applications.
• Design, organize, and execute laboratory tests while ensuring technical data quality.
• Analyze and interpret results, prepare comprehensive reports, and translate bench-scale findings into pilot- and full-scale recommendations.
• Support pilot operations, client-site treatment evaluations, system commissioning, and startup activities.
• Collaborate with internal departments, Field Services, Business Development, and clients.
• Contribute to scientific articles, national conference presentations, proposals, and communication of testing results.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.
• Competence with chromatographic and wet chemistry techniques and general laboratory work.
• Ability to apply data analysis tools and statistical methods, generate visualizations, and interpret experimental results.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects independently and collaboratively.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to work onsite in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM; ability to safely lift 40 lbs and use hand and portable power tools.

Nice to have

• PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with laboratory instruments including P&T GC, LC/MS/MS, TOC, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, and water-quality meters.
• Experience designing sorbent column tests and evaluating pilot-scale water treatment.
• Familiarity with coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, ion exchange, membrane separation, and biological treatment.
• OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training and a record of presentations or peer-reviewed publications.
