TL;DR
Principal Engineer - Distribution Planning (Power Systems): Leading complex electric distribution system studies and developing long-term capital plans with an accent on reliability, resiliency, DER interconnections, and regulatory compliance. Focus on evaluating power-flow and contingency results, designing Non-Wires Alternatives, mentoring engineers, and influencing cross-functional and regulatory stakeholders.

Location: In-office in Rochester, New York, United States

Salary: $128,320–$160,400 per year, dependent on experience and location

What you will do

  • Lead complex distribution system studies covering voltage, thermal performance, N-1 contingencies, reliability, resiliency, power quality, capacity, and DER integration.
  • Develop comprehensive planning studies, capital investment plans, and 10-year system outlooks.
  • Identify system deficiencies and recommend cost-effective solutions, including Non-Wires Alternatives.
  • Provide technical leadership on system design, planning strategy, policy development, and methodology improvements.
  • Mentor engineers and lead cross-functional initiatives involving internal stakeholders, regulators, and industry organizations.
  • Support regulatory proceedings, provide expert analysis and testimony when needed, and assist with storm restoration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required; an MSEE or equivalent advanced degree is preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in Distribution Planning, Reliability, or DER integration.
  • Expertise in complex power system studies, planning strategy, engineering design, and multi-year capital planning.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory standards, including NERC, NPCC, ISO, and PUC requirements.
  • Experience with power system analytics software such as CYME, PSSE, or ASPEN.
  • PE license preferred, with demonstrated cross-functional leadership and stakeholder communication skills.

Nice to have

  • Experience engaging with regulatory bodies and industry organizations.
  • Background in related areas such as T&D Engineering or Protection and Control.
