TL;DR
Principal Computational Engineer (HPC): Leading the design and implementation of scalable scientific computing solutions for life science research with an accent on high-performance computing, cloud computing, research software engineering, and data-intensive workflows. Focus on architectural strategy, parallel programming, secure computational applications, and supporting bioinformatics, genomics, imaging, and computational biology pipelines.

Salary: $114,400–$216,320 per year

What you will do

  • Define long-term technical vision and strategy for research computing and information systems supporting scientific programs.
  • Lead feasibility studies, estimates, design, implementation, and continuous improvement of computational applications and systems.
  • Guide architecture, security, performance monitoring, software installation, configuration, testing, and data processing operations.
  • Design and adopt scalable solutions across HPC, cloud computing, research software engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning platforms, and advanced data management.
  • Partner with researchers, data scientists, software engineers, institutional stakeholders, and regulatory entities to translate scientific needs into reliable computational capabilities.
  • Mentor engineering team members and provide project management guidance for delivery within timelines, budgets, and design specifications.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in computer science, data science, information science, mathematics, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of progressive experience developing, optimizing, or maintaining scientific or computational applications.
  • Demonstrated delivery of complex projects, cross-disciplinary collaboration, project leadership, and team guidance.
  • Recognized expertise in algorithms, pipelines, systems development, computational scalability, and reliability.
  • Expertise in parallel programming and high-performance computing with OpenMP, MPI, and Pthreads.
  • Strong UNIX/Linux scripting and high-level programming skills.

Nice to have

  • PhD in a related field.
  • Experience supporting research computing environments.
  • Experience with bioinformatics, bioimage, genomics, computational biology, or related life science pipelines.
  • Experience with HPC schedulers and platforms including Slurm, LSF, and Kubernetes.
