TL;DR
Software Engineering Intern (Spacecraft Flight Software): Building real-time, fault-tolerant software for 20kW+ spacecraft with an accent on subsystem control, state machines, and on-orbit operations. Focus on developing robust embedded applications, investigating anomalies, and integrating and testing spacecraft systems.

Location: Los Angeles; minimum 12-week internship performed in person at the HQ in Torrance, United States.

Salary: $30–$40 per hour; housing and travel stipend may also be available.

What you will do

  • Create software architecture for real-time, fault-tolerant control of 20kW+ spacecraft.
  • Develop software applications for propulsion, guidance and attitude control, thermal, power, and communications subsystems.
  • Design and implement state machines for robust spacecraft operation.
  • Build tools and infrastructure for rapid deployment, reliable development, and software testing.
  • Perform data analysis and anomaly investigations to identify and resolve software bugs.
  • Support spacecraft subsystem integration and testing, including actual on-orbit operations.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 6 months of technical engineering experience outside the university classroom, such as laboratory work, research, extracurricular projects, volunteering, personal projects, or prior work experience.
  • Development experience in Rust, C, C++, or Go.
  • Available for a minimum 12-week, in-person internship at the Torrance headquarters.
  • Must be a U.S. person under ITAR or otherwise eligible for a federally issued export control license.

Nice to have

  • Spacecraft flight software development experience.
  • Linux systems programming, driver development, and continuous integration and delivery experience.
  • Experience with hard real-time embedded systems, including bare-metal or RTOS environments.
  • Knowledge of electronics, computer architecture, and control systems.
  • Experience creating hardware-in-the-loop and hardware-out-of-the-loop test systems.
  • Ability to collaborate with technicians, engineers, and managers.
