Sr. Automation Engineer (Bioassay Automation)

Location: Norwood, Massachusetts, United States; 100% onsite with no remote work eligibility. Due to export control and regulatory requirements, only U.S. persons are eligible.

Salary: $121,600–$194,500 per year, with potential eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus, other incentive compensation, or equity.

What you will do

• Develop and harden automated cell-based bioassay and sample preparation workflows into scalable, GMP-ready systems.
• Translate bioassay requirements into automation solutions while preserving cell health, sterility, timing sensitivity, reproducibility, and assay integrity.
• Design cell handling workflows covering maintenance, passaging, transfection, treatment, and assay execution.
• Own technical execution across requirements definition, system integration, testing, deployment, and sustainment.
• Collaborate with Analytical Development, Applied Technologies, Analytical Sciences & Technology, Digital, and QC Operations on system transfer and deployment.
• Troubleshoot biological performance, liquid handling, and system integration issues while driving platform standardization and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• BS with 8 years of relevant experience, MS with 5 years of relevant experience, or PhD in Engineering, Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or a related discipline.
• Hands-on experience with cell-based bioassays or sample preparation workflows.
• Experience in regulated laboratory environments, including GLP or GMP.
• Experience programming and developing laboratory automation software, hardware, and liquid handlers.
• Full-time onsite presence in Norwood, Massachusetts is required; the role is not eligible for remote work.
• Must qualify as a U.S. person under applicable export control requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience with IQ/OQ/PQ validation support, change control, lifecycle management, and regulatory documentation.
• Experience automating mammalian cell culture, transfection, cell treatment, or plate-based bioassay workflows such as ELISA.
• Experience with cobot arms, decappers, centrifuges, dispensers, sealers, or peelers.
• Experience configuring Hamilton STAR or Vantage liquid handling systems and workcell scheduling software such as HighRes Cellario or Thermo CRS Momentum.
