Histology Technician I

What you will do

• Perform manual and automated immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining on tissue sections.
• Test and validate antibodies, optimize protocol parameters, and maintain procedural logs and laboratory SOPs.
• Receive, prioritize, process, embed, section, stain, and coverslip tissue specimens for pathologist review.
• Evaluate slide quality, troubleshoot staining artifacts, and maintain microtomes, tissue processors, embedding units, and automated stainers.
• Operate digital slide scanners, assess image quality, and upload images to digital repositories.
• Monitor laboratory inventory, communicate with pathologists and residents, and train student workers on routine techniques and safety protocols.

Requirements

• High school diploma and two years of laboratory or related experience.
• Knowledge of tissue processing, antigen retrieval, sectioning, staining techniques, and laboratory workflows.
• Ability to troubleshoot routine equipment and staining artifacts, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for interaction with pathologists, residents, and laboratory personnel.
• Ability to work safely with hazardous chemicals, including known carcinogens, while using required PPE.
• Availability for rotating holiday coverage and possible weekend or university-holiday work.

Nice to have

• Experience with microtomy, tissue processing, and basic IHC/IFC staining.
• HT (ASCP), HTL (ASCP), or equivalent certification.
• Experience with antibody optimization, fluorescence microscopy, image analysis, automated IHC stainers, and digital scanning software.
• Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or a related scientific field.
