TL;DR
Automation Controls Engineer (PLC/CNC): Engineering and implementing electrical and software controls for assembly, machining, tooling, and powertrain manufacturing equipment with an accent on PLC/CNC programming, automation integration, and launch support. Focus on troubleshooting robots, vision systems, RFID, and motion controls, resolving production issues, and coordinating controls deliverables across suppliers and plants.

Location: Dearborn, Michigan, United States; fully onsite. Travel up to 80% and off-shift work may be required during peak installation and launch periods.

What you will do

  • Lead assembly and machining controls engineering deliverables from simultaneous engineering through program launch.
  • Engineer and implement standardized hardware and software controls architectures across programs and manufacturing plants.
  • Program and troubleshoot PLCs, CNCs, robots, vision systems, and other automation equipment.
  • Support powertrain manufacturing programs, including cell machining systems, CNC controls, gantries, auxiliary equipment, and RFID systems.
  • Coordinate controls reviews with Tier I suppliers and represent the controls organization in program and management reviews.
  • Resolve controls issues involving feasibility, timing, cost, workload, and emergency downtime.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of implementation experience is preferred, with manufacturing controls engineering experience.
  • Experience with Structured Control Language, including FC/FB editing and creation.
  • Validated programming experience with Siemens, Schneider, and Bosch PLCs and CNC/motion control systems; Rockwell and Siemens experience is preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot PLC, CNC, robot, vision, and automation systems; read and design electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic prints; and understand communication networks and fieldbus protocols.
  • Fully onsite availability, willingness to travel up to 80% during peak periods, and ability to work off shift when required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with powertrain, assembly, machining, tooling, and vehicle equipment programs.
  • Knowledge of RFID systems, complexity management, QOS strategies, UL, ISO, IEC, PTME IT standards, and EP-Operator systems.
  • Experience applying FMEA, DOE, DMAIC, 5D, and 8D problem-solving methods.
  • Ability to implement AI models into existing workstreams to improve team efficiency.
