TL;DR
Corrosion Technician (Natural Gas Pipelines): Designing, installing, operating, and maintaining cathodic protection and corrosion control facilities for high-pressure natural gas pipeline systems with an accent on pipeline integrity, field testing, data analysis, and regulatory compliance. Focus on implementing long-term cathodic protection systems, evaluating coatings and grounding systems, troubleshooting electrical equipment, and supporting inspections across the Chicagoland area.

Location: Onsite at NGPL Station 113 in Shorewood, Illinois, supporting the Chicagoland metropolitan area. Monday through Friday with after-hours call-out responsibilities, travel within and outside the assigned area, and a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off.

Salary: USD $40.04–$54.88 per hour, with approved overtime and paid call-outs at 1.5 times the hourly rate.

What you will do

  • Design, install, operate, and maintain cathodic protection equipment and corrosion control facilities on high-pressure natural gas pipelines.
  • Conduct corrosion tests, inspections, measurements, surveys, coating evaluations, and data analysis.
  • Develop action plans, technical reports, site plans, budgets, drawings, specifications, and contract bid documents.
  • Compile corrosion data in American Innovations Pipeline Compliance System and support pipeline integrity program activities.
  • Assist with grounding systems, capital improvement projects, regulatory inspections, audits, and third-party construction oversight.
  • Respond to equipment and operational issues, including after-hours call-outs, while working safely in rural and densely populated areas.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; an associate’s degree in applied science or a two-year technical degree is preferred.
  • Two to four years of relevant experience is listed; equivalent skills and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to analyze cathodic protection data, use electronic test equipment, troubleshoot electrical and electronic equipment, and perform basic mechanical work.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, analytical, troubleshooting, communication, computer, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently, in extreme weather, overtime, travel, and after-hours call-outs.
  • Valid driver’s license, company insurability, safe work practices, and commitment to technical training and progressive testing are required.

Nice to have

  • NACE CP-2 or Internal Corrosion Technologist certification.
  • Experience with American Innovations PCS/CPDM, KAPA, and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of AC/DC electrical systems, 49 CFR Part 192, NACE standards, gas handling, and the National Electrical Code.
  • Experience with external corrosion monitoring, in-line inspections, close interval surveys, interference testing, cathodic protection design, coatings, NDT, and SCC characterization.
