TL;DR
Benefits Specialist I (Employee Benefits and HR Operations): Administering medical, dental, vision, retirement, leave, and supplemental benefit plans for employees while managing payroll deductions, vendor invoicing, compliance reporting, and employee orientations with an accent on benefits administration, payroll accuracy, and regulatory compliance. Focus on auditing deductions and invoices, supporting COBRA, HIPAA, ERISA, and ACA requirements, and maintaining accurate benefits records and communications.

Location: Must be based in Los Angeles or Washington, D.C.

Annual compensation: $70,000–$85,000, depending on qualifications and operational considerations.

What you will do

  • Administer medical, dental, vision, supplemental, and basic retirement benefits and respond to day-to-day employee questions.
  • Coordinate and conduct benefits orientations, open enrollment meetings, renewals, and vendor implementations.
  • Process payroll deductions, journal entries, leave-related adjustments, carrier transmissions, and benefits imports.
  • Create and audit spreadsheets for monthly vendor invoices and verify accurate deductions for new hires and eligible employees.
  • Administer leave-of-absence premium billing and support FSA reporting, LTD letters, and health care ordinance filings.
  • Support compliance activities, including 5500 filings, audits, required notices, and updated desk procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of employee benefits experience.
  • Knowledge of benefits laws and regulations, including COBRA, HIPAA, and ERISA.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word skills; knowledge of PeopleSoft/Oracle and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Basic accounting skills and the ability to manage recurring deadlines and multiple priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with strong customer service and confidentiality standards.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively and work overtime when necessary.
