Engineering Manager, SDET

What you will do

• Hire and lead the SDET team while defining its technical bar, framework standards, tooling, and engineering direction.
• Establish the organization-wide definition of tested software and enable engineering teams to meet quality outcomes at scale.
• Build an AI-assisted test generation strategy that converts acceptance criteria and user stories into test scripts, with appropriate guardrails and human review.
• Develop an end-to-end automation strategy across interactive web applications, APIs, and Kafka-based asynchronous eventing.
• Build regression registers, contract and API testing tools, coverage dashboards, and load and performance testing frameworks.
• Partner with SRE on test-environment parity and the future adoption of ephemeral per-PR environments.

Requirements

• Experience designing and owning a Playwright or equivalent end-to-end test framework from scratch.
• Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, including GitHub Actions or an equivalent platform, as release gates.
• Experience leading AI-assisted test generation, contract and API testing, and coverage tooling.
• Understanding of event-driven and asynchronous testing, including Kafka or equivalent systems, eventual consistency, retry and backoff patterns, and deterministic test data.
• CLI-native working style and familiarity with agentic coding tools.
• Previous experience hiring for a technical function, setting a high technical bar, developing engineers, communicating across functions, and navigating ambiguity.

• Experience establishing a test engineering or quality engineering function from zero at a scaling company.
• Experience designing load and performance testing frameworks.
• Experience partnering directly with SRE or infrastructure teams on environment strategy and parity.
• Open-source contributions to testing frameworks or tooling.
• Experience developing SDET or QE engineers into senior or technical leadership roles.

Hiring process

• Initial focus includes auditing current testing practices, proposing framework and tooling standards, and starting the SDET hiring pipeline.
• Within 90 days, the framework is expected to be scaffolded, connected to CI, and covering critical order-flow paths through API-level integration tests.
