TL;DR
Senior Project Engineer (Plastics Manufacturing): Developing and implementing customer, equipment, and manufacturing projects in a plastics plant with an accent on injection molding, capital equipment, process certification, and environmental compliance. Focus on leading cross-functional projects, installing high-value CapEx equipment, solving shop-floor process problems, and improving safety, quality, and productivity.

Location: Wixom, Michigan, USA; onsite at the Industrial & Specialty Plastics facility. The role requires hands-on work in a 24-hour, five-day-per-week plastics manufacturing plant and may involve extended domestic and international travel.

Annual base salary: $113,840–$128,070 for the Senior Plant Process Engineer level, plus a quarterly target bonus of 7.5% of base salary.

What you will do

  • Develop customer quotes, define requirements, support part design and design for manufacturing, and execute new opportunities.
  • Specify, purchase, track, and control tools, machines, automation, utilities, and other production equipment.
  • Lead cross-functional teams through new product launches and manage projects from capital package preparation through installation, startup, and production support.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives on the production floor, including visual controls, standard work, safety improvements, and projects with measurable return on investment.
  • Support mold troubleshooting, repairs, preventive maintenance, refurbishments, and daily manufacturing operations.
  • Manage plant infrastructure, assets, maintenance activities, environmental compliance, and process certification with the quality department.

Requirements

  • Eight years of hands-on plastics project engineering experience; ten years of process and project engineering experience in a plastics plant is preferred.
  • A four-year engineering degree is preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Mechanical knowledge of plastic-processing equipment, including injection molding machines, secondary equipment, automation, conveyance, utilities, and packaging.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, control charting, root cause analysis, fishbone analysis, Pareto analysis, and SPC.
  • Ability to read and understand 2D and 3D technical drawings and solve practical manufacturing problems with both modern and aging equipment.
  • Clear verbal and written communication, strong project organization, self-direction, and willingness to work the hours required to meet objectives.
