TL;DR
Senior Nuclear Methods Engineer (reactor physics and advanced nuclear energy): Developing, qualifying, and continuously improving steady-state and transient nuclear analysis methods for microreactor design, safety analysis, licensing, and operation with an accent on validation, uncertainty management, and design-margin recovery. Focus on coupled neutronics and thermal-hydraulics analysis, benchmarking, sensitivity studies, translating analytical results into engineering inputs, and incorporating testing and operational data into model improvements.

Location: Los Angeles, United States. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, asylees, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations under U.S. Government export regulations.

Salary: $150,000–$185,000 per year, plus equity.

Company

hirify.global is a Series C startup developing mass-producible, inherently safe microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications.

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain steady-state and transient nuclear analysis methods for reactor design, safety analysis, and licensing.
  • Qualify methods through code-to-code comparisons, benchmark problems, experimental validation, and uncertainty quantification.
  • Establish and maintain analytical biases, uncertainties, conservatisms, and design margins.
  • Perform gap analyses and develop plans to address deficiencies in methods, validation data, tools, and technical capabilities.
  • Translate nuclear analysis results into inputs for safety cases, licensing, mechanical design, manufacturing, and reactor operation.
  • Collaborate with design, safety, licensing, materials, manufacturing, and testing teams, using test and operational data to improve methods and recover design margin.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in nuclear engineering, reactor physics, nuclear methods development, safety analysis, or a related field.
  • Experience with reactor physics and transport tools such as MCNP, Serpent, SCALE, OpenMC, MOOSE-based applications, or similar codes.
  • Experience with steady-state and transient reactor analysis, including coupled neutronics and thermal-hydraulics methods.
  • Knowledge of reactor physics, neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, or coupled multiphysics analysis, with experience supporting reactor design or safety decisions.
  • Understanding of verification and validation, benchmarking, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification, and technical documentation.

Nice to have

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Reactor Physics, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience developing, qualifying, or maintaining nuclear analysis methods and automated workflows using Python, C++, MATLAB, or similar languages.
  • Familiarity with nuclear regulatory and licensing frameworks, software quality assurance, configuration management, and traceability for safety-related tools.
  • Experience with advanced reactor technologies such as microreactors, high-temperature gas reactors, fast reactors, or molten salt reactors.

Culture & Benefits

  • Equity included in the compensation package.
  • Work emphasizes systems thinking, first-principles reasoning, probabilistic decision-making, and questioning fundamental assumptions.
  • Teams prioritize end-user needs and unconventional solutions to complex energy and defense problems.
  • Deep work can be performed remotely, while in-person collaboration and face-to-face engagement with customers and stakeholders are valued.
