Process Piping Designer (Pharmaceutical)

Location: On-site office role based in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. Occasional travel may be required based on project needs.

What you will do

• Develop 3D piping models and 2D isometric and orthographic drawings using Revit and AutoCAD Plant 3D.
• Design GMP process utility systems including WFI, purified water, clean steam, CIP/SIP, process gases, and chemical transfer lines.
• Apply sanitary piping principles such as slope, drainability, dead-leg minimization, and ASME BPE compliance.
• Coordinate with process engineering, instrumentation and controls, mechanical, client, and vendor teams to resolve design conflicts.
• Maintain P&IDs, line lists, piping plans, isometrics, material take-offs, templates, libraries, and component catalogs.
• Provide technical support, onboarding, mentoring, and drafting standards for junior designers and contractors.

Requirements

• 3–7 years of piping design experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, high-purity, or sanitary process industries.
• Associate degree in CADD, drafting, engineering technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent technical training and hands-on experience.
• Proficiency with 3D piping design software such as AutoCAD Plant 3D, AVEVA E3D/PDMS, or SmartPlant 3D.
• Working knowledge of ASME B31.3 and ASME BPE standards, sanitary fittings, tri-clamp connections, orbital welding, and hygienic design.
• Experience with modular or skid-based pharmaceutical equipment, isometric review, clash detection, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and vendor drawings.
• Strong interdisciplinary coordination and communication skills.

Nice to have

• Autodesk Certified Professional certification in AutoCAD or Revit MEP.
• ASME BPE training or familiarity with the standard.
• Experience mentoring junior designers or standardizing CAD/BIM workflows.
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
