Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: San Francisco, California, United States; onsite five days a week

Base salary: $182,000–$230,000 per year, plus potential equity awards.

What you will do

• Read complex electrical schematics and understand the physical functionality of custom PCBs.
• Collaborate with electrical and software engineers to specify new hardware.
• Develop ground-up firmware for custom boards and extend existing firmware codebases.
• Design interfaces for third-party vehicle communication systems.
• Implement drive-by-wire retrofit systems for new vehicle platforms.
• Support field installations and troubleshoot hardware and firmware issues at customer sites.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
• Strong experience with embedded systems and real-time control applications.
• Proficiency with CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, and similar communication protocols.
• Deep understanding of electronics and hands-on experience with hardware implementation, testing, and validation through production.
• Exceptional debugging skills across software, firmware, and hardware domains.
• Willingness to travel occasionally for field deployments.

Nice to have

• Experience with J1939, CANopen, or LIN.
• Experience interfacing with off-highway vehicles or passenger cars.
