TL;DR
Platform Engineer (AWS/Linux): Developing and integrating custom software components and open-source code for cloud and Big Data platforms with an accent on AWS infrastructure, Linux systems, and infrastructure as code. Focus on designing operational software architecture, optimizing existing codebases, and building robust virtual infrastructure through complex systems integration.
Location: Columbia, Maryland, United States — hybrid, with 1–2 days per week in the office
Annual salary: $130,000–$270,000, depending on experience.

What you will do
- Develop custom software components and integrate open-source code to solve complex problems using AWS and Big Data technologies.
- Design and implement software architecture and capabilities from prototype through operational applications.
- Build and manage cloud infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code practices and modern tooling.
- Optimize existing codebases and improve system robustness, performance, and reliability.
- Integrate systems and work autonomously to identify and resolve technical problems.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship and a current Secret U.S. Government Security clearance are required.
- 5+ years of platform engineering or software development experience with a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education.
- Experience developing infrastructure in AWS.
- Strong knowledge of Linux systems, hosts, networks, security, and applications, plus Shell/Bash scripting proficiency.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to obtain Security+ certification within 60 days of hire and work in a hybrid environment.
Nice to have
- Experience with DISA’s Big Data Platform or systems such as Cloudera, Hortonworks, or MapR.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools such as GitLab-CI or Travis-CI.
- Familiarity with agile methodologies and tools including JIRA, Confluence, GitHub, or GitLab.
- Experience with Puppet, Ansible, Maven, or virtualization platforms such as oVirt, Proxmox, or VMware.
