Location: Silver Spring, Maryland, United States; based on the Silver Spring campus at least 4 days per week

What you will do
- Develop mathematical models of lung cellular processes, including cell division, migration, and adhesion, in 3D-printed scaffolds.
- Use mechanistic modeling and simulation to analyze cellularization experiments with endothelial, epithelial, and other cell types.
- Design iterative experiments based on model-generated hypotheses and evaluate uncertainty and variability in model outputs.
- Integrate cell-based models into multiscale lung models spanning molecular, cellular, and organ-level processes.
- Collaborate with internal and external laboratories to generate data for model training and validation.
- Communicate findings through visualizations, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in biomedical engineering, computational biology, applied mathematics, or a related field with 6+ years of industry experience developing computational models of biological systems, or a PhD with 2+ years of relevant industry experience.
- Expertise in cell-level modeling frameworks such as agent-based models or cellular Potts models.
- Experience with numerical methods, including ordinary and partial differential equations, optimization, and Monte Carlo methods.
- Fluency in a scientific programming language such as Python, R, or Julia.
- Experience with cell-based modeling and simulation packages such as Morpheus or CompuCell3D.
- Knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, drug development, and effective communication with technical and non-technical audiences.
Nice to have
- PhD in biomedical engineering, computational biology, applied mathematics, or a related field.
- Familiarity with quantitative systems pharmacology and modeling applications in pharmaceutical drug discovery and development.
- Experience with statistical and machine learning methods.
- Knowledge of pulmonary physiology.
