Laboratory Planner

Location: Hybrid work model in Boston, Massachusetts; Denver, Colorado; or San Diego, California, United States. Employees work in the office four days per week, with flexibility to work elsewhere on Fridays. Local and national travel may be required up to 20%.

Compensation: $85,000–$130,000 USD, listed as an hourly rate.

What you will do

• Develop laboratory program requirements, conceptual layouts, planning grids, space programs, and detailed design criteria.
• Plan and design research, teaching, clinical, analytical, and high-tech laboratory environments.
• Develop laboratory organization, workflows, service-distribution concepts, and documentation for equipment, casework, utilities, and laboratory spaces.
• Prepare and coordinate drawings, specifications, contract documents, meeting outcomes, and design decisions using Revit, Bluebeam, and related platforms.
• Collaborate with principals, project managers, architects, engineers, consultants, clients, and user groups throughout project delivery.
• Support equipment and casework selection, construction administration, proposals, project presentations, and responses to construction questions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture, engineering, planning, or a related field.
• At least five years of professional laboratory planning and design experience, including programming, planning, design, and documentation.
• Experience designing laboratory or research facilities, including BSL-2 and BSL-3 environments.
• Understanding of laboratory equipment, casework, workflows, service distribution, building codes, design standards, regulations, and construction practices.
• Proficiency with Revit, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and relevant design software.
• Must be eligible to work in the United States without work visa or residency sponsorship. A current portfolio or work samples in PDF format is required for consideration.

Nice to have

• Professional registration or progress toward registration.
• Experience with academic, research, teaching, clinical, or analytical laboratory facilities.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, Enscape, Lumion, Adobe InDesign, or Adobe Photoshop.
• LEED, WELL, or another sustainability-related credential and knowledge of sustainable laboratory design.
• Membership in the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories.
