Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Fintech)

Location: 100% onsite in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Remote weeks are coordinated around major holidays, but this is not a remote opportunity. Relocation assistance is available.

Salary: NYC-level total cash compensation with a base of $160,000 into the $200,000s, plus equity and a discretionary cash bonus.

What you will do

• Design and evolve RESTful APIs for frontend applications and internal systems.
• Own relational data modeling, query performance, indexing, and schema evolution.
• Improve backend reliability, observability, and operational excellence through metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting.
• Contribute to architectural decisions involving service boundaries, asynchronous workflows, and distributed-system tradeoffs.
• Diagnose and resolve production issues across multiple services.
• Partner with product stakeholders to translate complex business rules into maintainable backend systems and improve infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building web applications at scale with a modern language and framework such as Python/Django or Rails.
• 2+ years of experience leading technical teams and large, complex projects.
• Deep knowledge of relational databases, including PostgreSQL, query optimization, indexing strategies, and schema evolution.
• Experience operating production systems in a major cloud provider, especially AWS.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, background job systems such as Celery, caching with Redis, and monitoring tools such as Datadog or CloudWatch.
• Strong understanding of system reliability, failure modes, operational tradeoffs, and communication with non-technical stakeholders.
