Computer Graphics Engineering Intern (Unreal Engine)

Location: Champaign, Illinois, United States; onsite. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States. This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship. Relocation is not available.

Salary: $18.00–$27.00 per hour.

What you will do

• Design and maintain immersive simulation, visualization, and training applications using Unreal Engine and real-time 3D technologies.
• Develop realistic marine environments, vessel simulations, interactive experiences, and rapid prototypes for product development, validation, demonstrations, and user testing.
• Implement gameplay systems, interaction logic, user interfaces, simulation workflows, and XR applications across VR, AR, and MR.
• Integrate simulation platforms with hardware, embedded controllers, sensors, displays, and external devices.
• Develop communication interfaces using Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP, CAN, Serial, and other standard protocols.
• Create and optimize 3D assets, animations, visual effects, audio systems, internal tools, plugins, and automation workflows while troubleshooting graphics and hardware integration issues.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and pursuing a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, computer graphics, game development, or a related technical field.
• Experience with Unreal Engine, Unity, or a similar real-time 3D development platform.
• Strong programming skills in C++, C#, Python, or a similar language.
• Experience developing interactive applications, simulations, visualization systems, or games.
• Knowledge of computer graphics fundamentals, 3D mathematics, geometry, physics, networking, software architecture, debugging, and performance optimization.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

Nice to have

• Unreal Engine C++ and Blueprint development experience.
• XR, hardware integration, embedded systems, connected devices, simulation, digital twin, visualization, or training application experience.
• Experience with Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Substance Painter, custom tools, plugins, workflow automation, or rendering techniques such as ray tracing and GPU optimization.
• Experience with game design, interaction design, animation, visual effects, audio integration, HIL/SIL testing, or real-time communication systems.
• Experience in marine, automotive, robotics, aerospace, off-road, or industrial applications, or interest in AI, XR, simulation, and immersive experiences.
