Director, Legal (Genomics)

Location: San Diego, California, United States; hybrid schedule with 2–3 in-office days per week and additional on-site presence as needed. Must reside in the San Diego area and be able to commute to the offices.

Salary: $224,900–$337,300 base salary per year, plus eligibility for variable cash compensation and equity for eligible roles.

What you will do

• Advise finance, commercial, product management, and other teams on go-to-market strategies and strategic initiatives.
• Provide legal counsel for complex commercial transactions and customer negotiations.
• Draft and negotiate high-value strategic customer agreements while maintaining key customer relationships.
• Develop contracting processes for customers, vendors, and collaborators.
• Implement controls and operational processes aligned with contractual commitments, risk frameworks, and approval authorities.
• Support M&A diligence and lead post-M&A integration activities.

Requirements

• At least 15 years of relevant legal experience, including 10 or more years of management experience.
• J.D. degree from an accredited law school in the United States.
• Membership in the California bar or eligibility to practice as an in-house attorney under California out-of-state attorney rules.
• Strong legal drafting, strategic and analytical thinking, communication, and negotiation skills.
• Experience working with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment and maintaining high professional standards.
• Experience using AI tools effectively and ethically.

Nice to have

• Five or more years of top-tier law firm experience combined with in-house experience.
• Experience with public sector procurement contracts.
• Technical degree in chemistry, life sciences, engineering, material sciences, or a related field.
• Knowledge of genetics and other biological sciences.
