3 x Health & Safety Adviser (Science and Engineering)

Location: Auckland City Campus, Auckland, New Zealand; flexible working from home and flexible hours are offered.

Salary: NZ$87,000–NZ$107,500 per annum, depending on skills and experience.

What you will do

• Provide practical health and safety advice across complex teaching, research, laboratory, and engineering environments.
• Identify and manage hazards and risks, review risk assessments, and support controls for higher-risk activities.
• Lead and support incident response, investigations, corrective actions, and organisational learning.
• Conduct safety walks, inspections, audits, and assurance activities.
• Coordinate health and safety documentation, training, records, reporting, and compliance requirements.
• Build relationships with academics, researchers, technicians, managers, professional staff, and students while using safety data to identify emerging risks.

Requirements

• Relevant tertiary qualification and approximately 3–4 years of health and safety experience, preferably in a complex, operational, laboratory, research, engineering, manufacturing, or other technical environment.
• Strong knowledge of risk management, hazard identification, incident management, and health and safety compliance.
• Experience with incident investigations, corrective actions, continuous improvement, risk assessments, procedures, and safety documentation.
• Experience conducting audits, inspections, safety walks, and other assurance activities.
• Strong communication, relationship-building, influencing, organisational, and administrative skills, with the ability to work autonomously and challenge constructively.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with large or complex health and safety management systems.

Nice to have

• For Science positions: a degree in Science, Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related discipline.
• Chemistry qualification or background.
• For the Engineering position: a degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Experience with Sidetrack or Ideagen, previously Damstra.
