Staff Engineer — Agentic AI

Location: On-site in San Francisco, CA, United States; this is not a remote role.

Salary: $160,000–$250,000 USD annually, depending on experience. Equity participation is included.

hirify.global is a well-funded, early-stage AI startup developing mechanical engineering software for Fortune 100 hardware engineering customers.

What you will do

• Lead development of the core agent intelligence layer for multi-step workflows across CAD, CAE, PLM, and other complex desktop engineering tools.
• Own the product loop from user-story definition and implementation through benchmarking against real engineering workflows.
• Define evaluation frameworks, establish baselines, and improve agent task completion and cost-efficiency metrics.
• Set per-task token budgets and track the cost of completed workflows.
• Make architecture decisions covering tool calling, state management, error recovery, model routing, and context management.
• Lead a small technical team while writing production code, reviewing designs, and collaborating with integrations, product, domain experts, and customers during POCs.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years building agentic LLM-based agents for real-world, multi-step workflows.
• Deep experience with LLM application architecture, including model selection, context management, retrieval, tool-calling frameworks, and orchestration.
• Strong evaluation and benchmarking experience covering task completion, cost efficiency, and failure-mode analysis; familiarity with SWE-bench, GAIA, or τ-bench.
• Experience shipping AI systems with measurable outcomes rather than demos.
• Strong Python skills and hands-on experience with function calling, tool-use APIs, tracing and observability tools, and evaluation frameworks.
• Experience leading a small technical team of 3–6 engineers and driving architecture decisions and code reviews.

Nice to have

• Experience with desktop automation, COM, or programmatic application control beyond web APIs.
• Background in mechanical engineering, CAD/CAE, PLM, or adjacent industries.
• Familiarity with enterprise deployment constraints on locked-down corporate workstations.
• Published work, open-source contributions, or public benchmark experience in agentic AI systems.
