Backend-Leaning Product Engineer (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA; hybrid/on-site presence required. Candidates must be based in San Francisco or willing to relocate to the United States.

Base salary: Up to $275,000 per year, depending on experience. Meaningful equity package.

Early-stage B2B SaaS startup with a small, high-ownership product team focused on shipping customer-facing products.

What you will do

• Own customer-facing features end-to-end, from design and implementation through shipping and iteration.
• Build and maintain backend systems, APIs, data models, and automation pipelines.
• Integrate external tools, legacy systems, and third-party services.
• Design workflows and orchestration for AI- and automation-driven product features.
• Debug production issues and make engineering trade-offs under pressure.
• Collaborate with founders, customers, and cross-functional stakeholders while contributing to full-stack work when needed.

Requirements

• Backend-focused software engineering experience designing, implementing, and shipping customer-facing features.
• Ownership of the full feature lifecycle, including ideation, implementation, and iteration based on customer feedback.
• Track record of shipping real products in 0-to-1 or ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills.
• Legal eligibility to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
• Based in San Francisco or willing to relocate; hybrid/in-office presence is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with applied AI, agentic workflows, RAG pipelines, or LLM-enabled features.
• Python proficiency and experience with modern web or backend stacks.
• Experience integrating external APIs and legacy platforms.
• Early-stage startup or founding engineer experience.
