Backend Systems Engineer (Distributed Systems)

Location: 100% remote within the continental United States

Salary: $100,000–$150,000 per year, plus benefits.

What you will do

• Design and implement large-scale distributed backend systems using Java, Go, Scala, or similar languages.
• Architect data partitioning, replication, consistency, and storage strategies for different workloads.
• Build resilient APIs and event-driven services with observability, idempotency, graceful degradation, and robust failure-handling patterns.
• Optimize latency, throughput, capacity, and cost through profiling, benchmarking, load testing, and performance tuning.
• Lead architecture reviews, technical design discussions, incident response, post-incident learning, and long-term platform planning.
• Mentor engineers, maintain technical documentation, and partner with SRE and platform teams to improve reliability and reduce operational toil.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
• 6+ years of backend engineering experience, including substantial distributed systems experience.
• Strong programming skills in Java, Go, Scala, or a similar high-performance language.
• Deep understanding of consensus, replication, CAP trade-offs, and high-throughput systems such as Kafka.
• Experience operating systems at scale, using SQL, relational and NoSQL data stores, and AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Must work directly as a full-time W2 employee in the continental United States; no C2C, 1099, or third-party arrangements. No new H1B sponsorship is available, but valid H1B transfers are supported for qualified candidates.

Nice to have

• Experience leading complex technical initiatives across multiple teams.
• Production experience with Kubernetes-based platforms and service-mesh technologies such as Istio or Linkerd.
• Familiarity with chaos engineering or contributions to relevant distributed systems open-source projects.
