Kubernetes Service Engineer (Service Mesh)

Location: 100% remote within the United States

What you will do

• Design and operate Istio and Linkerd service mesh platforms across multi-cluster Kubernetes environments.
• Implement mTLS, certificate rotation, workload identity, authorization policies, and zero-trust patterns.
• Define traffic management policies covering routing, retries, circuit breaking, fault injection, ingress, egress, and API gateways.
• Build mesh observability with distributed tracing, golden signals, and topology visualization.
• Optimize mesh performance, sidecar resource usage, and control-plane footprint through measurement and data-driven improvements.
• Create adoption patterns, onboarding guides, runbooks, and architecture documentation while partnering with SRE, platform, and security teams.

Requirements

• Must be based in the United States.
• 6+ years of experience in platform engineering, SRE, or networking.
• Production experience operating Istio or Linkerd and strong knowledge of Envoy proxy internals.
• Deep Kubernetes expertise, including networking, CNI, and ingress.
• Strong knowledge of mTLS, PKI, certificate lifecycle management, distributed tracing, and mesh observability.
• Proficiency in Go or Python for tooling and automation.

Nice to have

• Experience with multi-cluster Istio or Linkerd deployments.
• Familiarity with Cilium service mesh and eBPF networking.
• Open-source contributions to service mesh projects.
• Experience with SPIFFE/SPIRE and enterprise zero-trust networking initiatives.
