Senior Backend Engineer (Payments/Lending) (Payments/Lending): Building double-entry ledger, accounting, and payment systems that track drawdowns, repayments, interest, and fees across the life of a loan with an accent on financial correctness, idempotent transaction flows, reconciliation, and auditability. Focus on designing fault-tolerant backend services, integrating payment rails and banking partners, and safely evolving production systems where data integrity is critical.

What you will do
- Design, build, and own the double-entry ledger and accounting engine for loan origination, drawdowns, repayments, interest, and fees.
- Build idempotent, fault-tolerant transaction flows and integrate with payment rails and banking partners, including NPP/PayTo, BECS/direct entry, card, and settlement providers.
- Implement interest accrual, settlement, and fee logic for regulated financial data.
- Design reconciliation processes, immutable audit trails, observability, monitoring, and incident-response capabilities.
- Own features from architecture through production, including safe data migrations, backfills, and production changes.
- Guide technical design and code reviews while mentoring engineers and raising backend quality and security standards.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience with a strong backend focus.
- Hands-on experience building or substantially owning ledger, accounting, or core banking systems.
- Strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping, reconciliation, settlements, interest calculation, and idempotent transaction handling.
- Strong backend fundamentals including relational databases, data integrity, transaction isolation, concurrency control, and API design.
- Experience with regulated environments, compliance, auditability, and data governance, such as ASIC, APRA, PCI-DSS, or SOC 2.
- Experience owning architecture for complex applications and safely managing migrations, backfills, and production changes.
Nice to have
- Experience with payment gateways, banking integrations, lending, fintech, or payments platforms.
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and eventual-consistency patterns in financial systems.
- Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical workstreams as a senior individual contributor.
