Litigation Attorney (AI)

Location: San Francisco, United States

Salary: $275,000–$375,000 per year, plus equity. USD salary ranges apply only to U.S.-based positions.

Perplexity is a rapidly growing AI technology company building an AI answer engine and technologies for searching and interacting with the internet.

What you will do

• Manage litigation matters and pre-litigation disputes through strategy, pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions, hearings, trials, and appeals.
• Advise on intellectual property, privacy, commercial, and regulatory disputes across first-party and third-party contexts.
• Evaluate litigation threats and develop resolution proposals that minimize business disruption.
• Select, manage, and collaborate with outside counsel, including negotiating budgets and fee arrangements.
• Partner with AI, product, and engineering teams to identify risks, support active matters, and provide practical legal guidance.
• Build scalable litigation processes, legal-hold and discovery workflows, and support regulatory investigations and inquiries.

Requirements

• JD and active membership in good standing with a U.S. state bar; California is preferred.
• 15+ years of law firm and/or in-house experience handling complex commercial litigation.
• Deep knowledge of litigation practice and procedure with a record of strong outcomes and effective case execution.
• Strong analytical, organizational, collaboration, business judgment, and communication skills.
• Ability to translate unsettled legal doctrine into concise, business-relevant guidance for executives and technical teams.
• Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

• Experience representing AI or other emerging technology companies in copyright, privacy, and commercial litigation.
• Experience managing regulatory responses or investigations.
• Experience building or scaling a litigation function at a growth-stage company.
• Experience litigating cases across multiple jurisdictions, including internationally.
• Interest in developing innovative and trustworthy AI.
